We at Premier Pest Management have come across a problem which is attacking Pygmy Date Palms here in the Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero and other parts of Florida. This pest is called Red Date Scale and has caused more problems with these Palms when they are in shaded areas with little sun or wind movement. For this reason we do not recomend that you plant these Palms in pool enclosures or areas close to the house which are very shady. When this pest is on your Palms you will see a crusty layer of material on the stems and new shoots that are coming out of the Palm. If this is not addressed your Palms will eventually die.
